Clean Needles, Oklahoma
#1
hepatitis C death rate of any state, every year 2017–2023
Clean Needles, Oklahoma makes the case for restoring legal protection for syringe services programs, which expired on July 1, 2026 when SB 511's five-year sunset passed and the extension died without a Senate vote. It is advocacy written to hold up under scrutiny: Oklahoma has had the highest hepatitis C death rate of any state every year from 2017 to 2023, research estimates are shown with their confidence intervals (including the weak ones), and overdose deaths are deliberately not used as an argument because the cross-state data doesn't support it. A Python pipeline pulls CDC surveillance tables, CDC provisional overdose counts, Census population, the LAPPA 50-state law summary, and PubMed abstracts, then builds a six-chapter static page with hand-written D3 charts and a state map. Every quoted figure lives in a claim ledger that the build checks against the saved source text, and a generated sources page shows where each number came from. Published via GitHub Pages.
